Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find a list of some of the questions and answers that this ordinance change has brought to our attention. If you do not find an answer you seek here, please contact us using the form below to forward your question via email.

WHY ARE RATES INCREASING SO MUCH? The Fort Collins City Council ordinance change is designed to create an ecomonic incentive to recycle more. In addition, base level fees must be set to cover the all route collection costs as well as the added costs created by the ordinance, including the necessary investment in new equipment for all customers. More detailed explanation can be found here.

WHAT IS THE MAIN REASON FOR THIS CHANGE? The main reason for the ordinance change is to stimulate recycling enough to meet the goal of 50% recycling by 2010, set several years ago.

WILL I BE ALLOWED TO USE MY OWN CONTAINER FOR TRASH OR RECYCLING? You will initially be allowed to use your own containers for both services.   However, more routes are moving towards automated collection and will require all customers to use a cart for both services in the future (1-2 years).

WHAT IF MY PERSONAL CONTAINER FOR TRASH IS LARGER THAN 35G, 65G OR 95G AS ALLOWED? We would advise that you change to one of our containers to ensure you meet city code requirements. Containers that we find exceed the city code limits (30-gallon increments) will be billed at the next service level higher. For example, if you use a 45-gallon container, you will be billed for the 65-gallon or 2-can service level.

WHEN CAN I EXPECT TO RECEIVE MY NEW CONTAINERS?  First, you must submit your service change request, either on this website or by returning the Postcard we sent you. If you have already submitted your service change request, we will be scheduling the exchange in the coming weeks ON your pickup day.

WHAT ELSE CAN WE EXPECT AS CHANGES TO OUR SERVICE IN THE FUTURE? More changes are yet to come. It will take some time to determine all impacts of the ordinance on the current market. In addition, the city is planning to implement a pilot trash district which would require every household living in the designated area to go with the city selected hauler. Watch this website and our quarterly newsletter for more details as the develop.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO SUPPORT YOU STANCE AGAINST DISTRICTING? Please don't hesitate to let your city council know how you feel. We greatly appreciate any support you can give us in defending your rights and our family business' future.

HOW DO I FIGURE OUT WHAT MY NEW RATE IS? Your bill that includes services for September will show what your rate going forward will be, unless you elect to reduce your service type.

HOW CAN I DETERMINE WHAT MY RATE WOULD BE IF I REDUCED MY SERVICE TYPE? For competitive reasons, we do not list our prices on our website. However, to determine what the price would be for a lower service level, use the following to calculate it:

  • If you have a 65-gallon cart now, the rate for a 35-gallon would be 1/2 of your NEW rate showing for September services.
  • If you have a 95-gallon cart now, the rate for a 35-gallon would be 1/3 of your NEW rate showing for September services, and a 65-gallon would be twice the calculated 35-gallon rate.
