Some of the changes in this ordinance are designed to increase the amount of waste that is recycled in Fort Collins from residential households and help reach a waste diversion rate of 50% by the end of 2010.
Currently, unlimited curbside recycling service is included within your standard household trash service rate. In the past you may have found it difficult to fit all you could be recycling into your existing small recycle bin(s). As a part of the ordinance changes, GSI will now offer large carts for single-stream recycling at the curb.
You may now elect to use either your existing 18-gallon recycle tub, a 65-gallon recycle cart, or a 95-gallon recycle cart. The carts will provide much more room for recycle materials, so you may find you are able to recycle more of your waste and "step down" to fewer or a smaller trash container. The large carts have lids which will also reduce the potential for litter in your neighborhood on pickup days. Please note that you will still need to follow all preparation guidelines for recycling, especially those relating to recycling cardboard.
To further stimulate a reduction in carbon emissions, haulers will also be moving pickup of recyclables to Every-Other-Week rather than weekly service in the coming months. These hauler recommended changes have been long awaited. All customers will be notified when this change is scheduled to affect their neighborhood.
