On July 21, 2009, the City Council approved the creation of a trash district in Fort Collins. The area will include around 6500 households in the area NORTH of Prospect Road, WEST of College Avenue, SOUTH of the Poudre River, EAST of Overland Trail.
On January 14, 2010 the City of Fort Collins Staff released the following statement:
"City staff issued a Request for Proposals for contractors willing to provide trash and recycling services within the proposed District. Two proposals were received and both contractors were interviewed. City staff has negotiated a contract for trash and recycling service in the District which is contingent upon City Council approval. The hauler selected through the RFP process is Waste Management of Northern Colorado."
There will be a public hearing for Fort Collins citizens to learn more about the Pilot Trash District contract that has been negotiated with Waste Management as the sole hauler for all trash and recycling in the pilot area. The meeting will be on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, 6 p.m. at the City Council Chambers.
The intent of using a pilot program is to gather information about the capability and efficiency of using one hauler in a designated area to service all trash and recycling households. In eventuality, this plan can evolve into a CITY-WIDE, mandatory program which will disregard the freedom of choice for all Fort Collins residents. They will no longer get to select the best value for their hard-earned dollar.
For two local companies, Gallegos Sanitation and Ram Waste, the future of many jobs, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost money to the local economy are at stake. Please consider attending the City Hall meeting on February 2, 2010.
